Run the pump on a schedule, within its rating
A pool or pond pump is the heaviest thing most people plug into an outdoor timer, so start with the label on the motor. It gives the running amps, and a motor draws more than that for a moment when it starts. Pick a timer rated above the running figure with room to spare: the digital pool timers here come in 15 A and 20 A, and the mechanical outdoor timers are rated 15 A.
The digital pool timers hold six programs and hang from a 2 ft cord, which helps when the outlet sits a little away from the pump. The heavy-duty mechanical timer cuts the day into 96 pins of 15 minutes, handy for running a filter in several short bursts. A pump drawing more than 20 A needs a hard-wired timer fitted by an electrician. the TiFFCOFiO selection prints the rating on each timer so the match is easy to check.

Read the amps on the pump label. If the running figure is close to 15, choose the 20 A timer so the start-up surge stays within the rating. Above 20 A, use a hard-wired timer.
It is built for outdoor use, but keep it clear of splashing, hang it with the outlets facing down and plug it into a GFCI-protected outlet.
