Let the sky set the schedule
A clock timer set for 6 p.m. is late in December and early in June. The timers on this page skip the clock: a photocell watches the light, switches the outlets on at dusk and switches them off at dawn, or after 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 or up to 10 hours, depending on the model and the mode you pick.
You choose the mode on a dial on the plug-in timers and on the dusk-to-dawn power stake, and with a remote from up to 100 ft away on the remote timers and the remote stake. The landscape transformer does the same for 12 V garden lights. Point the sensor at open sky, away from the lights it controls. the TiFFCOFiO line puts the sensor on the housing, so where you hang the timer decides what it sees.

Most often the sensor sees the lights it controls. A bright porch lamp shining on the sensor reads as daylight. Turn the timer so the sensor faces open sky and away from the lamp.
It works anywhere the sensor sees the change from day to night, but indoor lamps and window light can confuse it. Indoors, a 24-hour or digital timer is steadier.
