Which outdoor timer runs your lights
Most outdoor timers on this shelf answer one of two questions. The first is "same time every day?" A 24-hour pin dial does that: each pin is a half hour, you push down the ones you want on, and the pattern repeats until you change it. The heavy-duty version cuts the day into 96 quarter-hour pins for a pool pump that needs to run in short bursts.
The second question is "on when it gets dark?" The dusk-to-dawn timers read the sky through a light sensor and switch on at dusk, then off after the 2 to 10 hours you pick on the dial. Nothing to reset when the clocks change in spring or when December nights get long. The remote versions do the same from up to 100 ft away, so you can pick a mode from the kitchen window.
The digital timers take several on and off programs and come with a 2 ft cord for an outlet that sits a little too far from the pump. The pool models are rated 15 A or 20 A. A mechanical timer runs on a 24-hour dial with pins, so it switches at the same clock times every day. A dusk-to-dawn timer has a light sensor: it switches on when it gets dark and off after the hours you choose, so it follows the season on its own.
Check the pump label first. The mechanical outdoor timers are rated 15 A, and the digital pool timers come in 15 A and 20 A versions with a 2 ft cord. A pump that draws more than the timer rating needs a hard-wired timer fitted by an electrician.
Toward open sky and away from the lights it controls. A porch light shining on the sensor makes it think it is daytime and switches the lights off again.
